In November 2008 I had the privilege (thanks to Steve Pitts and Jennifer Pinkley) to go on a trip into Fern Cave with National Geographic photographer Stephen Alvarez. In this brief video (link below) "Stephen Alvarez describes the challenge of lighting an enormous underground cave and the exhilaration of succeeding".
The photo is of 437 foot deep Surprise Pit. The silhouetted caver is a friend of mine, Jimmy Romines. I am the caver in white hanging on rope about 120 feet off the floor of the pit. A couple hundred feet above me on another rope is Alvarez's assistant and fellow caver Luke Padgett. Cavers John Benson, Steve Pitts and Cathy Borer assisted at the bottom of the pit and Sabrina Simon and Nathan Williams (two other excellent cave photographers) assisted with lighting at the top of Surprise Pit.
It was amazing to watch professional photographer Stephen Alvarez in action. Check it out at National Geo's website:
